New Hampshire
Estado (pob., 2000: 1.235.786 hab.) en el nordeste de EE.UU. Es uno de los estados de Nueva Inglaterra; limita con Canadá y los estados de Maine, Massachusetts y Vermont de EE.UU.; el océano Atlántico se ubica en el sudeste.

New Hampshire ocupa 24.043 km2 (9.283 mi2) de superficie; su capital es Concord. El río Connecticut define su límite occidental con Vermont. El monte Washington se encuentra en las White Mountains, en el centro del estado. Los indios algonquinos (ver lenguas algonquinas) habitan la región cuando los primeros ingleses se asentaron cerca de Portsmouth en 1623. En 1641, la zona quedó bajo la jurisdicción de Massachusetts y en 1679 se convirtió en una colonia de la corona separada. Fue la primera colonia en declarar su independencia de los británicos en 1776. Después del establecimiento de la república, el estado creció rápidamente; la agricultura prosperó y la industria se desarrolló a orillas de los ríos. Portsmouth se convirtió en un importante astillero naval. En la actualidad, la economía se basa principalmente en la industria y el turismo, si bien la producción lechera y la extracción de granito son también importantes. Puesto que es donde tiene lugar la primera elección primaria para presidente, se ha convertido en el terreno de pruebas de muchas candidaturas. Dartmouth College y la Universidad de New Hampshire son dos de las instituciones educacionales más importantes del estado.
